Period 1: Pre-reading and Going to School

Topic: Water play, route to school and introduction to Ravi
Text Focus: Pre-reading activity and first paragraph

1. ଅଧୀତି (Adhiti — Introduction) — 7 minutes

I will begin by asking learners:

  • Have you seen a pond, pool, river or canal?
  • What do you do when you go near water?
  • Do you like to touch cool water?
  • Have you floated paper boats in rainwater?
  • Can you see your image in clean water?

I will write the following actions on the blackboard and ask learners to tick the activities they do near a pond or pool:

  • Touch the cool water
  • Paddle water with feet
  • Splish-splash hands in water
  • Float paper boats on water
  • Look at image/shadow in water

I will tell learners that water is enjoyable, but they must never go near a pond, canal or river without an elder.

2. ବୋଧ (Bodh — Conceptual Understanding) — 12 minutes

I will introduce the lesson:

“Today we will read about Ravi and his friend. They walk to school every day and enjoy many interesting things on their way.”

I will read the first paragraph aloud:

“Hello, I am Ravi. I study in Class 4. My friend and I go to school on foot. We pass through the paddy fields, the mango grove and then reach the main road. That is the shortest route we take to school.”

I will explain:

  • On foot — walking, not using a vehicle.
  • Paddy field — a field where rice is grown.
  • Mango grove — a piece of land where many mango trees grow.
  • Main road — an important, large road.
  • Route — a way from one place to another.

I will draw a simple route on the blackboard:

Home → Paddy field → Mango grove → Main road → School

3. ଅଭ୍ୟାସ (Abhyas — Practice) — 9 minutes

I will ask learners oral questions:

  • Who is the speaker in the story?
  • Which class does Ravi study in?
  • How does Ravi go to school?
  • Who goes to school with Ravi?
  • What do Ravi and his friend pass through?

Expected answers:

  • “Ravi is the speaker.”
  • “Ravi studies in Class 4.”
  • “He goes to school on foot.”
  • “His friend goes with him.”
  • “They pass through paddy fields and a mango grove.”

4. ପ୍ରୟୋଗ (Prayog — Application) — 8 minutes

I will ask learners to tell their own route to school using simple words:

  • “I go from home to school.”
  • “I pass through a road.”
  • “I see a temple on my way.”
  • “I see a shop near my school.”
  • “I cross the main road carefully.”

I will help learners make a route chain orally:

My home → lane → market → school

5. ପ୍ରସାର (Prasar — Extension/Sharing) — 4 minutes

I will ask learners to tell a family member:

“My route is the way from my home to school.”

Assessment: I will check whether learners can say who Ravi is, how he goes to school and name the places on his route.

Home Assignment: Draw the route from your home to school using simple pictures or arrows.
